Glen Moriwaki is a Bay Area artist living in Oakland, California. Glen paints large abstract and semi-abstract acrylic works on paper and canvas. Over the years, the inclusion of collage, mixed media, text, and found-materials has opened his work to subject matter that deals with his background as a third-generation Japanese American growing up in California after WWII.  Although the formal issues of abstraction and paintwork continue to drive his art, recollections from the past increasingly crop up in his paintings, leading to his exploration of the intersection of history, culture, childhood, and memory.

Recent work includes a series of very large multi-panel paintings, some of which are permanently installed in public spaces.  Each work is comprised of many discrete paintings, which are then assembled into non-preconceived compositions.  His current work includes an on-going abstract series of large, unstretched canvases that are layered in heavily applied blue and white strokes.

Glen received his BA, MA, and MFA from UC Berkeley, studying with Joan Brown, Elmer Bischoff, and David Simpson. His work has been exhibited in San Francisco, Los Angeles, France, and Hawaii. Among his recent exhibitions: “Swing,” DAB Art Gallery, Los Angeles, CA (site-specific installation) 2020; “Abstract Only! 10th Anniversary,” Wailoa Art Center, Hilo, HI 2020; “Salon At The Triton,” Triton Museum of Art, Santa Clara, CA 2019; “Glen Moriwaki,” Galerie L’Espace 13, Mur-de-Barrez, France 2016; “Glen Moriwaki,” Galerie-In-Situ, Label Friche, Nogent-le-Rotrou, France 2015.
